The article reveals the meaning and significance of the principle of equality in Ukrainian law of the Cossack-Hetman era. The use of modern historical-legal science category of «equality» allows you to more fully and objectively explore various aspects of historical-legal reality. First of all, it is important in the study of the legal system at different stages of the history of the Ukrainian people. In the period of the principle of equality in Ukrainian law influenced the genesis of the national media had a
sense of justice and legal ideology of the Cossacks and town dwellers.
During the Cossack Hetman era there existed a complex legal institution category of «equality». The idea of equality are the following concepts common to all social strata: the equal rights of the Ukrainian people from other nations of the Commonwealth and non-discrimination regardless of religion, ethnicity, residence, social class membership
and property, equal rights to occupy public offices and positions in the organs governments, representatives of equal status of individual states (Ukrainian and Polish nobility, Ukrainian and Polish townspeople, Orthodox and Catholic
clergy, etc.), equality before the court, the level of cultural rights, including rights to education and printing, etc. That establishment of the Institute of equality in Ukrainian law was similar to the formation of his right in contemporary advanced European countries. Сategory of «equality» in the study of legal principles down Cossack- Hetman era becomes an important methodological importance, as it provides an opportunity to overcome the narrow interpretation of the law of this period as the only class, birth right, which was based on the principles of social, class and property inequality. Also,
the category «equality» is of great methodological importance for the reproduction of historical processes of legal foundation and law-making and the formation of the Ukrainian legal tradition.
