One of the peculiarities of nanoparticles is that they are bounded by a strongly warped surface
and the volume of their surface layer is comparable with the volume of the nanoparticle. Because
of this, the surface tension and chemical potentials of components in nanoparticles depend on
size r. These peculiarities of nanoparticles must be taken into account in thermodynamic studies.
The methods of the thermodynamic description of the nanoparticle state suggested by Gibbs,
Shcherbakov, and Hill have been analyzed and the limits of the applicability of each considered
method have been defined.
