The paper deals with discourse analysis of a diary text and a diary activity represented by the records of Serhiy Yefremov, a philologist, literary man, critic and researcher in textology. The records describe events of the social and academic life in the period of twenties (XX century) in Ukraine after the revolution and the civil war and may be interpreted as a special case within the scope of case study in discourse analysis of diary texts. Yefremov’s records are examined in the perspective of the author’s pragmatic model of a diary text type, which is based on the idea of parametrization of the communicative subject (here — the diarist), whose activity is determined by several pragmatic roles (role model). The analysis of the lexical and syntactical peculiarities of Yefremov’s records has made it possible to show the disproportionate dominance in this case of two pragmatic roles while the representation of the others is minimized. These data lead to the conclusion that this diary text has two addressees — not only the inner addressee (the diarist himself), but also anouter one. So the specificity of pragmatic characteristics of Yefremov’s records should be considered as a result of variation in the diary discourse. This fact can he explained by the influence of an extra-linguistic context whose general effect on diary semantics and its style was crucial.
