Aims. An important indicator of a marker is its resolving power, i.e. the ability to differentiate the data. Therefore the goal
of this study is to determine how using surnames allows to differentiate the gene pool of the Ukrainian population living
in regions with different demographic history. Methods. Surnames in a nationwide ukrainian list arranged in descending
order of frequency and they are assigned in rank. For each region average Location Index is calculated and compared with
the all population of Ukraine. Results. The distribution of frequent surnames across the border of the Ukraine including
its fi ve regions is studied. We established that the Location Index differs the average Ukrainian values from the Western
region (I₁₀= 22.5, I₂₀= 37.1) in a greater extent than Central region (I₁₀= 6.3, I₂₀= 11.1). Central, Southern, Northern and
Eastern regions form a cluster, where the Eastern region (I₁₀= 13.0, I₂₀= 24.2) is most distant from the average Ukrainian
values. Conclusions. Ukrainian surnames can serve as an indicator refl ecting the characteristics of the regions of the
country. The Location Index indicates the Western region as most specifi c. Other regions form the cluster close to the
nationwide ukrainian by the value of the Location Index. The most «typical» is the Central region.
