Aims. The set of 79 winter durum wheat varieties was studied under different periods of artifi cial vernalization and
subseguent growing under long and short photoperiods. Methods. The study revealed a signifi cant difference between
these varieties in vernalization response and degree of photosensitivity. Results. Modern varieties possessed low and
medium photosensitivity, and had vernalization duration of 20 to 25 days. Conclusions. The best winter durum wheat
varieties by adaptivity to unfavourable winter conditions need vernalization duration of 25–30 days and high degree of
photoperiodic sensitivity.
