The article analyzes journalistic and memoir materials belonging to the outstanding literary
critic, literary critic and publicist Sergei Yefremov (1876-1939) on the basis of methodological
tools of social constructivism, generational history and collective memory. The figure of a
prominent historian, archaeologist and political activist Volodymyr Antonovich (1834-1908)
was in the focus of his attention for a long time. It is proved that the image of V. Antonovich
in the categories of «sociology of knowledge» can be defined as «generalized Other» in the
individual lifeworld of S. Yefremov. The urgency of the topic under consideration follows
from the need for the integration of historiographical interpretations, source material and
methodological developments in the field of sociology, psychology, history of mentality. The
author of the article tries to draw the reader’s attention to such a valuable source as personalized
journalism S. Yefremov, and seeks to answer the question of how the figures of the cultural
(organizational) and political stages of the Ukrainian movement of V. Antonovich constructed
his jubilee image, as the commemorative canon was formed, finally, which transformations of
the image occurred in the 1920s. It is concluded that in the analyzed texts of S. Yefremov the
following qualities of V. Antonovich as «teacher of generations» were fixed, such as fidelity to
the ideals of youth, life democracy, nobility, purposefulness, work ability, modesty, Ukrainiancenteredness,
stability of spirit, ability to organically combine «science» and «politics» in their
lives, the ability preach by their own example and to encourage young people to work in the
nation. The evolution of S. Yefremov’s views from the 1900s of journalistic writings to the
academic studies of the 1920s was traced.
