The article deals with the communicative and linguo-pragmatic peculiarities of the personage types
in Thornton Wilder's play "The Matchmaker." The linguostylistic and extralinguistic means of creating the
verbal and non-verbal personage characteristics are defined. The working term "situational-behavioural type of
communication” is introduced.
In order to determine the individual categories of characters in Thornton Wilder’s play, we have taken as a
background the theory of personality by British scientist and psychologist Hans Jurgen Eysenck and have
applied it to the personages in the play "The Matchmaker." Accordingly we have highlighted the situationalbehavioural
types of communication.
Guided by personality traits of each of the categories (defined by Hans Eysenck), we have conducted an
evaluation analysis of characters’ dialogic speech in Thornton Wilder’s play, emphasizing the expressive means
of the language.
These personages’ characteristics enabled to figure out situational-behavioral types of communication that are
formed on the basis of the relevant type of personality. Situational communication in the analyzed play has been
grouped into six types, such as: 1. Aggressiveness; 2. Authoritarianism; 3. Politeness; 4. Avarice; 5. Proneness
to conflict; 6. Sensitivity. Thus, the behavior and expressive style of communication is determined by the
characters’ individual psychological type.
Due to linguo-stylistic analysis there have been revealed the emotional component of the linguistic identity,
character and experiences of personages in the play.
