We have investigated freshwater bivalves Anodonta cygnea from the native population of the Gnizna river (the basin of the Dniester river) in a rural area (N group) and after their dislocation for 30 days in the urban zone of the Gnizna river (U group) and in the recreation zone of the Ternopil Lake (R group). The mussels’ dislocation under new conditions in both cases caused the changes of the chromatography behavior of metallothioneins (MTs) and a decrease of the metal-binding function of MTs alongside with an increase of the zinc content in the mussels’tissues. A decrease of the copper content in the tissues of the mussels of U and R groups was observed. Moreover, the part of copper in MTs of mussels from the Ternopil Lake and the river was increased and decreased, respectively. The variation of the ratio of the zinc and copper contents in MTs of mussels can be a potential biomarker of the changes in water conditions.
