The roll in beetles means an initially stable uprise with a roll over the body. In a
diagonal roll one of the forelegs and the opposite hind one serve as a support. Visual
observation, stereofilming, and three-dimensional measurements show that the work of
nonhomologous joints in Supporting legs ensures the roll in Blaps halophila, viz. the subcoxal joint in the foreleg and the trochantero-coxal joint in the hind leg. The axes of these
joints are almost parallel in the space. During the diagonal roll the minimal lifting of the
centre of gravity above the substrate is achieved.
