Терміни «покаяние» та «покаяти ся» у «Повісті временних літ»

Abstract

Статтю присвячено дослідженню термінології покаяння у старших давньоруських текстах. Якщо точніше, вивчається використання іменника «покаянье» та дієслова «покаяти ся» у «Повісті временних літ». Нашим завданням є простежити усі випадки слововжитку і спробувати з’ясувати, що спонукало до їх появи. Тоді як семантика покаяння розробляється в працях з історії церковного права, середньовічної книжності та духовного життя, загальних проблем взаємин людини і світу в середньовіччі, використання цих слів у літописах та інших історичних наративах привертає менше уваги гуманітаріїв. Стверджувалося, що іще за життя князів літописці радо відзначали скоєні тими гріхи, щоб змилостивити Бога. Насамперед треба вказати, що слова «покаяние» та «покаяти ся» ПВЛ вміщує порівняно в небагатьох статтях. Вони повністю відсутні в описах початку історії та язичницької Русі й уперше з’являються в оповіді про «поганську реформу» Володимира Святославича 980 р. Загалом нараховується лише трохи більше десятка контекстів, що означає, що ними не розмінювалися в буденних описах. Крім усього іншого, Початковий давньоруський літопис, на відміну від джерел 2-ї пол. ХІІ та ХІІІ ст., практично не вживає слово «покаяние» в описах діянь князів. Єдиним винятком є згадки Володимира Святославича, коли освітлювалася найважливіша для історії Русі, з точки зору середньовічних авторів, подія охрещення. Відтак, ім’я князя потрапило у відповідний контекст виключно через висвітлення теми охрещення. В усіх інших випадках книжники, схоже, намагалися уникати імен князів у тих місцях, де експліцитно згадувалися «покаяние» та «покаяти ся».

The article is devoted to the terminology of repentance in one of the elder Old Rus texts. In more strictly sense we analyze the using of the noun «repentance» («pokayanie») and the verb «to repent» («pokayati sya») in the Primary Chronicle. The task is to study the word occurrences and to find out what triggered their appearance. While the semantics of repentance is developed in the fields of the history of the church law, medieval spiritual life and literature, the general problems of the relationship between man and world in the Middle Ages, the use of those words in the chronicles and other historical narratives attracts less scholar attention. However, it was argued that the chroniclers willfully pointed to the sins committed by the Rus princes by their lifetime to turn God to mercy. First of all, it should be noted that words «to repent» and «repentance» occur in the Primary Chronicle in relatively few entries. In particular, they are completely absent in the story on the emerging of Rus. The very first occurrence is the narrative about the «pagan reform» of Vladimir Sviatoslavich in 980. In total there are slightly more than a dozen contexts, which imply they were not used in everyday descriptions. Besides, the Primary Chronicle, unlike the sources of the 2nd half of the ХІІ – ХІІІ c., practically does not use the word «repentance» in descriptions of the princes’ deeds. The only exception is the figure of Vladimir Sviatoslavich, involved in the most important for medieval authors the story of the baptism of Rus. That is, the name of prince put in repentance context due to a topic of a baptizing. As it seems, in all other cases scribes avoided a mention of princes in those passages, where words «repentance» and «to repent» were used explicitly.
