The study of the «Great Terror» times, a large-scale campaign of mass repressions of citizens that was deployed
in the USSR in the 1937–1938, requires not only an analysis of the regional features of the punitive actions
of the Stalinist regime, but also the disclosure of the names of those individuals who were involved in the general
cleansing of the Soviet society. Petr Vasilievich Karamyshev, the head of the NKVD in the Nikolayev region in 1938
stands out among the number of organizers of the «Great Terror» in the south of Ukraine. Today there is detailed
biographical information on this NKVD officer, some specific facts of his activity are illustrated, and the trial of him
and his followers is described in details. However, none of the published materials can be considered as a biographical
essay. In view of this, there is a need to reproduce P.Karamyshev’s life and to characterize his long-term
activity in the Soviet state security agencies.
