Арнольд Ван Геннеп: теорія та практика етнографії

Abstract

Les Alpes ont joué un rôle précoce et décisif dans l’intérêt de Van Gennep pour la recherche folklorique. Ces montagnes où il a passé une partie de sa jeunesse ont constitué un fécond terrain d’exploration et d’expérimentation pour l’élaboration et la validation d’hypothèses scientifiques fortes (théorie des rites de passage ou théorie des «zones folkloriques» par exemple). Van Gennep a aussi publié de grandes monographies folkloriques issues d’enquêtes directes ou indirectes, en particulier sur le Dauphiné et la Savoie. Notre article met l’accent sur l’enquête de terrain et les problèmes de communication avec les «témoins» interrogés. Van Gennep critique vivement les recherches qui généralisent à partir d’observations très localisées ou qui s’aveuglent sur la qualité des informations recueillies dans des situations d’échanges souvent très inégaux. Mais l’ambition encyclopédique de Van Gennep le conduira en fait à transiger avec ses propres exigences méthodologiques à la fois fortes et pionnières.

The Alps played a crucial role in Van Gennep’s interest in folklore research. Mountains were he spent a part of his youth, became a fruitful basis of his theoretical research and experiments for putting into shape and supporting important hypotheses such as the «theory of the passing rituals» or the theory of the «folk zone». Van Gennep published fundamental folkloristic books which were the result of his direct and indirect research, of Dauphiné and Savoy in particular. In this article the importance of regional studies and the problems of communicating with the respondents are pointed out. He actively criticized the studies in which the results of the local research are generalized as well as studies in which the quality of the received information is ignored, or is interpreted incorrectly. His encyclopedic ambitions led him to creation of his own research methods which were fundamental and pioneering at the same time.
