Походження назви Русь

Abstract

У статті наводяться докази того, що на початку VII ст. руси в азовсько-чорноморському регіоні вже існували: вони брали участь в облозі Константинополя в 626 році. Автор вважає, що етнонім русини на означення жителів Прикарпаття та Закарпаття з’явився раніше від назви держави Русь і походить безпосередньо від назви кельтського (галльського) племені rutheni. Походження етноніма русини розглядається в тісному зв’язку з походженням назви Галичина, утвореної від ойконіма Галич, який виводиться від етноніма галли.

In the article, the evidence is given that at the beginning of the 7th ct. the Ruses already dwelt in the Azov sea — Black sea region: in 626 they took part in the siege of Constantinople. The author argues that the ethnonym русини denoting the inhabitans of the Transcarpathian and Subcarpathian regions appeard earlier than the name of the state of Rus’ and derives immediately from the name of the Celtic (Gallic) tribe rutheni. He elucates the origin of the ethnonym русини as closely related with that of the name Галичина, deriving from the place name Галич considered as originating from the ethnonym галли.
