The biographical essay on the life and work of P.Lazarsfeld presents the scientist’s family and close environment, the circumstances accompanying the beginning of his professional career in Europe and his emigration to the USA where his formation as a classic in sociology took place, and finally, his activity in the post-war Europe. The author analyses the role of P.Lazarsfeld in the development of instrumental sociology, his position in the arguments between conceptual and experimental approaches in social sciences.
