Morphology of articular cartilage and its innervation are studied in 18 mammal species, one bird species and 2 reptile species. In the examined animals the perichondrium and contiguous parts of shoulder joint cartilage are innervated for the whole life-time. Cartilaginous tissue is innervated only up to a definite period of the post-embryonic life of an animal. Coming from the character of nerve arrangement in the tissue structure and relation of these nerves to the sources of innervation, it is possible to discuss the differences in principle between the cartilage and perichondrium innervation.
