This article deals with three aspects of the American military language. These are: 1) its hierarchical structure (which corresponds to the hierarchy of the speech community), 2) its tendency to be renewed during the times of conflict and crisis, 3) the influence it has on non-military speakers (the latter largely due to the war coverage in media). Within the military slang, one may distinguish between the slang of the Navy, of the Air-Force, of the Marine Corpse, and the ground troops. Within each of these, several other social dialects also exist. The role of mass-media in promoting the military slang is becoming crucially important, which has to do both with growing technologies and the informational warfare strategy.
