The temperature and field dependences of magnetization
of the nanocomposite compound GdNiO₃
were investigated in the temperature range 0.5–150 K
at magnetic fields up to 14 T. The temperature dependences
of specific heat at magnetic fields up to
9 T were investigated too. Anomalies of static susceptibility,
specific heat, and dynamic magnetization
were detected at 0.7, 1.6 , and 13 K, respectively.
These anomalies are associated with
magnetic phase transitions.

The effect of a normal H₂ impurity upon the radial thermal expansion ar of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundles has been investigated in the interval T = 2.2–27 K using the dilatometric method. It is found that H₂ saturation of SWNT bundles causes a shift of the temperature interval of the negative thermal expansion towards lower (as compared to pure carbon nanotubes) temperatures and a sharp increase in the magnitude of ar in the whole range of temperatures investigated. The low temperature desorption of H₂ from a powder consisting of bundles of SWNTs, open and closed at the ends, has been investigated.

An alternative view at the zero-bias anomaly of metallic point contacts
Gloos, Kurt
We have studied the zero-bias anomaly of point contacts as function of contact size for a wide range of materials from simple normal metals, superconductors, and magnets to highly correlated heavy-fermion compounds. The size dR of the zero-bias anomaly varied in a universal manner proportional to the square of the contact resistance R between 1 W and 10 kW, that is for contact radii from about 15 nm down to 0.2 nm. Magnetic impurities, two-level systems, or a tunneling barrier are unlikely to be the main source of this anomaly. We suggest instead Kondo-type scattering of the conduction electrons due to a spontaneous electron spin polarization at the point contact.
